Letter from Jeff Jones

To Whom It May Concern:

As a concerned parent and community member I wish to implore you to keep our community of Old House Run in the Godwin school district when considering the new redistricting plan.

Before you make any decisions I would also ask that you please visit our communities, along with the outside consultant Mr. Cropper, to consider how you will impact real people who will be affected by this change.

I fail to see how it makes sense to disrupt long-standing communities who are not in the midst of huge growth and whose schools are not overcrowded when a problem of overdevelopment lies elsewhere.

We along Pemberton Road have built relationships with hundreds of people over the years in neighboring communities and are extremely upset that we might possibly be divided.

Again, I wish to express how I am extremely upset that communities like Old House Run, that have been here for over 25 years, might possibly be disassociated with Godwin High School. This is our community school and we have invested enormous amounts of time, energy and even our money to make it what it is today.

Thank you for your kind consideration to this matter.

Sincerely,

Jeff Jones

Response from Lisa Marshall...

Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns with me regarding the redistricting process and in particular the Old House Run neighborhood. Please visit the HCPS website for the most current information on the redistricting project at: http://www.henrico.k12.va.us/boundaries/redistricting.html Please attend and observe committee meetings and email any concerns to committee members. Public forums are scheduled for January and March and I plan on attending those sessions. The School Board will not see the proposals of the committee until January and is attempting to refrain from involving ourselves in the committee process at this time, so as not to compromise the community panel process we have put in place. You have correctly directed your email to the redistricting committee members who are in the process of formulating plan. After the public comment sessions (which I hope will consist of extensive community input), consideration and extensive deliberations, the Board will vote on proposals in May.

I will forward your email to Pat Kinlaw Assistant Superintendant for Administrative Services for his information. Your concern and input is important and will be shared with the committee. Again thanks for contacting me and please know that I am well aware of the concerns a redistricting measure such as this has on parents. I think about this process constantly and await the proposed plans and public dialog that will begin in January. If you have not already done so it might be helpful to you to attended one of the redistricting committee meetings and directly observed how the process is progressing. I would be happy to speak with you if you care to call me at the number below.

Sincerely,

Lisa A Marshall

Response from Mary Hedrick...

Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you for your e-mail. I have received many e-mails from residents of your neighborhood asking how they can best express their opinions about the redistricting process. Please continue to e-mail committee members and attend the committee meetings, especially the public forums that will be held in 2009. These are the best ways to ensure that your opinions are taken into consideration as the redistricting process moves forward.

I hope you realize that at this point all maps and proposals are works in progress which are constantly being revised as we receive input from the county and from community members such as yourself. These revisions will continue right up until the final vote by the school board in May.

Thank you again for taking the time to write and share your thoughts.

Mary N. Hedrick, member, high school redistricting sub-committee
